Roscoe Roof Replacement, Made Simple

Roscoe had 11,017 residents at the 2020 census. It is big enough to have its own permit desk on Main Street, yet small enough that one storm can touch much of the village at once. That happened in spring 2026, and some homeowners are still sorting out roof damage from the April 2026 tornado.

Not every roof question here is about the storm, though. Plenty of Roscoe roofs are just reaching the end of their run. Either way, the first step is the same: a licensed roofer looks at the whole roof and tells you plainly whether a repair, a partial fix or a full replacement makes sense.

Roofs Inside and Outside Roscoe Village Limits

A Roscoe mailing address does not always mean a home sits inside the village. The village points owners to one simple test: look at your property tax bill. If the Village of Roscoe is listed, village rules apply. If it is not, Winnebago County handles your building questions instead.

That split matters for paperwork, not for how the roof is built. We don't have a trustworthy figure on the age of Roscoe's houses, so your roofer reads the roof itself, checking the decking, the vents and every valley. The village is also rezoning its Main Street district under the "Main Street District Roscoe Blueprint," a plan worth knowing about if you own property near downtown.

How Roscoe Requests Work

You send one request, and one IDFPR-licensed roofer who covers Roscoe follows up. Ask them about any of these:

  • Full tear-off and replacement. The right call when patching no longer keeps water out. More on full roof replacement.
  • Tornado, wind and hail repairs. Documentation and pricing for storm damage, with no claim handling. More on storm and hail damage.
  • Metal roofs. Panels that cost more upfront and usually last longer. More on metal roof replacement.
  • Shingle roofs. Standard architectural or impact-rated lines, quoted together. More on shingle roof replacement.
  • Smaller fixes. One leak or a handful of missing shingles may not call for a new roof. More on roof repair.

After the April 2026 Tornado in Roscoe

In April 2026 the Village of Roscoe said officials were assessing "the recent tornado that affected our community." It asked residents with roof, siding, window or garage damage to fill out the state's IEMA damage-assessment survey. The village later posted disaster proclamations for the April 2026 tornado and a storm update on May 15, 2026.

We found no NWS hail report for Roscoe itself in recent years. At the county level, NWS Chicago says damaging hail peaks in May and June, and nearby Machesney Park recorded 1.25-inch hail on June 29, 2023.

If your roof was hit, the roofer's role is to inspect, photograph and price the repair. Filing and settling the claim stays with you and your insurer, along with a licensed public adjuster if you hire one.

Roscoe Village Permits or Winnebago County?

For homes inside village limits, the Village of Roscoe issues permits from 10631 Main Street. You can call (815) 623-2829 or email applications to permits@roscoeil.gov. The village's permit pages do not mention roofing by name, so your roofer confirms the permit with the village before starting.

If your tax bill does not show the Village of Roscoe, the village sends you to Winnebago County instead. Check with the county's planning office at 815-319-4350; we don't state whether it requires a re-roof permit.

Whichever office applies, an Illinois roofer must put their license number, and their name exactly as licensed, on each bid and contract.

No one publishes roof prices for Roscoe on its own. The rows above are state, Rockford and regional figures, so a real bid for your house could land above or below them. Storm work can also raise costs if decking or flashing has to be replaced along with the shingles. Ask for each of those items as its own line, so you can see exactly what your insurer's estimate covers and what it leaves out.

Closer Than You Think

  • Calm help after a storm. You get a roofer who explains the damage plainly, without pressure to sign that day.
  • A verifiable license. Every referral goes to an IDFPR-licensed roofer whose number belongs on the contract.
  • Deductible offers are illegal here. Illinois forbids contractors to pay or rebate your deductible, so walk away from anyone who offers.
  • Time to change your mind. On insurance-funded jobs, state law gives a written cancel window after a claim denial or proof of loss.

Roscoe Questions, Answered

Who issues roofing permits in Roscoe?

Inside village limits, the Village of Roscoe handles permits at 10631 Main Street, (815) 623-2829. If your tax bill does not list the village, you are under Winnebago County. Your roofer should confirm the permit with the right office before any shingles come off.

My roof was hit by the April 2026 tornado. What now?

Start with photos and a call to your insurer if you have not made one yet. The village also asked residents with roof damage to complete the IEMA damage-assessment survey. A licensed roofer can inspect, document and price the repair, while the claim itself stays with you and your insurer.

A roofer offered to cover my deductible. Is that allowed?

No. Illinois law forbids a contractor to advertise or promise that it will cover or give back any part of your insurance deductible. After a big storm, that pitch tends to show up at the door. Treat it as a reason to choose someone else.

Does Roscoe get much hail?

We found no recent NWS hail report for Roscoe itself. Across the region, NWS Chicago says damaging hail is most common in May and June. A neighboring village, Machesney Park, logged 1.25-inch hail on June 29, 2023. Wind from the April 2026 tornado is the more recent concern in Roscoe.

License number on every bid

Illinois roofers must put their license number and licensed name on bids, contracts and ads. Check it on the state's IDFPR lookup.

No deductible deals

Illinois law bars contractors from promising to pay or rebate any part of your insurance deductible to win the job.

A window to cancel

For an insurance-paid job, you can cancel until midnight on the earlier of 5 business days after a written denial or 30 business days after your proof of loss.
